Ngati Toa Sea Scouts Plunder Napier Booty

Scouts from the Kapi-Mana region brought back most of the silverware from the Cutty Sark Sea Scout Regatta in Napier over Easter.

Seven troops from Auckland to Wellington attended including Kapi-Mana’s Ngati Toa (Mana) and Tarapunga (Paraparaumu), and Auckland’s New Lynn; the champion troop from the 25th National Sea Scout Regatta in 2005.

After the disappointment of cancellation of the 26th National Regatta on Porirua Harbour this last Xmas, Ngati Toa’s 38 scouts (11y-15y) and venturers (15-18y) and 34 Leaders and supporting parents took the battle to New Lynn, and did Porirua proud.

Ngati Toa won all the sailing events: venturer sunburst (Michael & Jono), scout sunburst (Amberlee & Hannah), venturer cutter (Richard, Joe & Matt) and scout cutter (Grant, Jareth, Anton, Chris & Conor). Callum & Bridget and Josh & Ollie were 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the scout sunburst sailing.

The Ngati Toa scouts, cox’ed by Hannah, then rowed to an emphatic win in the cutter rowing with the venturers, cox’ed by Jono, battling to a close 2nd behind Napier’s Westshore venturers.

After a night of recovery in the hot pools of Ocean Spa, all 160 youths took to the water for kayak racing around a triangular course in a swift outgoing tide that encouraged pile-ups at each turning mark. Michael and Joe were 1st and 2nd in the venturer kayaking; Grant and Jareth were 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the scout section.

The Ngati Toa venturers captained by Michael then won their seamanship competition; a mixture of boatsmanship and boating safety drills. The scouts captained by Hannah were 3rd to Evan’s Bay’s Britannia and Paraparaumu’s Tarapunga.

The ironman competition consisted swimming, kayaking and a 2km run. Grant, Anton and Josh beat the other scout teams, including Jareth, Bridget and Joe in 3rd and Ollie, Amberlee & Hannah 4th, with the venturers Joe, Emma & Jono combining well to take 2nd to Paraparaumu’s Tarapunga.

Lastly, the cutter dragon boat-like paddling event was won by the Ngati Toa venturers cox’ed by Kris.

All and all, not only was this a fantastically successful weekend in the competitions but the kids and parents showed great comradery within the troop but with the other scout groups as well, and had an absolute ball.

And now they know what might have happened if the Porirua National Regatta had gone ahead – the thought of #1 sits sweetly in their hearts.
